Priority Sectors
Aluminium Sector
The aluminium sector is a strategic component of Türkiye’s manufacturing industry, supplying essential materials to a wide range of downstream sectors, including construction, automotive, defence, consumer goods and advanced manufacturing. As demand for lightweight and recyclable materials continues to grow globally, aluminium is expected to play an increasingly important role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. At the same time, the sector is highly exposed to international climate and trade developments, particularly the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), given its strong integration with European markets.
According to the Low-Carbon Pathway for the Aluminium Sector, unlike many major aluminium-producing countries, Türkiye’s industry is primarily concentrated in semi-aluminium processing rather than primary aluminium production. In 2022, Türkiye exported USD 6.7 billion worth of aluminium products, with 61.8% of exports directed to the European Union, underscoring both the sector’s international competitiveness and its exposure to evolving low-carbon market requirements. The industry has developed a substantial semi-aluminium processing base, reaching 1.91 million tonnes of production in 2021, while domestic primary aluminium production remains comparatively limited. This distinctive structure means that decarbonisation challenges and opportunities in Türkiye differ from those of many global producers, with particular importance placed on resource efficiency, recycling, supply-chain emissions and competitiveness in export markets.
The aluminium sector low carbon pathway covers both primary and secondary (recycled) production, focusing on renewable electricity sourcing, energy efficiency and increased use of recycled aluminium to reduce the sector's carbon intensity.
